What Exactly is Hand Casting?

Hand casting (also called life casting or 3D hand casting) is a process that creates a permanent three-dimensional sculpture of your baby's hands or feet. Unlike a plaster hand print (which is flat, two-dimensional), a hand cast is a full sculptural replica — showing the exact size, shape, depth, and texture of your baby's hand from every angle, including underneath the fingers.

The Process — Safe, Quick, and Gentle

Step 1 — The Impression: We mix a small quantity of medical-grade alginate — the same material dentists use for dental impressions — and gently place your baby's hand (or both hands, or feet) into it for approximately 30–60 seconds. The material is completely non-toxic, cool to the touch, and sets quickly. For most babies, especially sleeping newborns, this process is entirely unnoticed.

Step 2 — The Cast: Once the impression is removed, we pour a high-quality casting compound into the mould. This cures over 1–2 weeks in our studio.

Step 3 — Finishing: The finished cast is cleaned, finished in your chosen colour (white, ivory, antique cream, metallic gold, or silver), and beautifully mounted on a backing for display.
