What Happens During a Cake Smash Session

A typical cake smash session at our studio has two distinct parts:

Part 1 — Clean Portraits: The session begins with clean, beautifully posed portraits of your baby in their birthday outfit, in front of the themed setup. These are the frame-worthy, formal images — the ones that go on the wall and into albums.

Part 2 — The Smash: We introduce the cake. What happens next depends entirely on your baby's personality. Some babies dig straight in with both fists. Some pick delicately at the icing. Some throw the entire cake. Some cry the first time and then laugh. Every reaction is different, and every reaction makes incredible photos.

After the Smash — The Splash: Many families choose to add a splash session — your baby in a small tub of water, being cleaned up after the smash. These images have their own gorgeous quality: the laughter, the splashing, the messy hair.

How to Prepare Your Baby

• Feed them beforehand, but not too much. A slightly hungry baby is more interested in the cake. A full baby may ignore it entirely.
• Schedule during their happy time. Every baby has a predictable window in the day when they are at their most alert and cheerful. Schedule your session during this window.
• Don't introduce cake beforehand. The first taste of sugar during the smash — that expression of total surprise and then delight — is one of the most photographed moments in all of baby photography. Keep it a first experience.
• Bring a change of clothes. For after the smash, obviously.
